Description

The Erebus memorial plaque is located at Kihikihi. It is fixed to a tree beside the Rewi Maniapoto memorial. The memorial is dedicated to Cecil (Cecillia Campbell) and Jack (John Barnham) Emmett who were killed in the Erebus disaster on 28 November 1979. It was presented by the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers.

The front page of the Te Awamutu Courier on 29 November 1979 records that the couple had farmed at Arohena for some years before moving to a property at Ōrākau a few years previously. A memorial service was held for them at the Kihikihi Presbyterian Church on 8 December 1979.
