Description
The Mangapouri Mission was established in 1834 by Rev. A.N. Brown and James Hamlin of the Church Missionary Society, later joined by Rev. William Williams. Located on the east bank of the Waipā and Pūniu Rivers, it served the Waikato tribes but was operational for only two years.
Staffed by James Hamlin, Rev. James Stack, and their families, the mission was abandoned in 1836 due to fears of unpredictable behaviour from Ngāti Te Ata chief Katipa Te Awarahi. The Mangapouri Mission Monument was erected 100 years later to mark the site and its brief history.
