Description

John Elder Moultray (1865-1922) trained as a painter in the Edinburgh School of Art. He arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand in 1883, settling in Dunedin with his father and brother.

Moultray exhibited with the Otago Art Society circa 1883-4, and again in 1911-1916. He also exhibited with other New Zealand Art Societies in the interim. Known for his historically themed paintings, especially of the Aotearoa New Zealand wars. Nationally, his works can be found in the Hocken Library and Auckland Museum.
