Description

The Te Awamutu and District War Memorial Park, opened by Prime Minister Sidney Holland on 4 December 1955, honours those who served in WWII and later conflicts such as Korea, Malaya, Borneo, and Vietnam. A plaque at the park’s entrance commemorates the occasion:

Te Awamutu & District / War Memorial Park / Built in proud and grateful memory of / those men who served their country / in the 1939 – 45 war. / Opened by Sir Sidney Holland / 4th December 1955.”

The park features a ceremonial concourse shaped like a cross, with stone walls inset with dedicatory tablets. The central tablet commemorates those who served and gave their lives, while 13 additional tablets list 151 local servicemen who died in various wars. Over time, further tablets were added to honour those who sacrificed in subsequent conflicts.

Description

The St John’s Church Māori NZ Wars Memorial commemorates Māori supporters of the Kīngitanga who died from wounds sustained at Hairini and Ōrākau in 1864. The memorial obelisk, erected in 1914, stands in front of the St John’s Church and marks the site where the remains of these individuals were interred at the request of George Selwyn, the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand.

This site is significant for its connection to the Māori resistance during the New Zealand Wars, particularly the 1864 Invasion of Waikato.

Description

The Teasdale Memorial commemorates 11 unknown imperial troops who died during the New Zealand Wars. The memorial obelisk honours Colonel Sergeant E. McKenna, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery at Cameron Town on September 7, 1863.

Designed by Mr. Prickett and completed by July 1917, the memorial stands in a council reserve, part of a garrison cemetery established in 1864. The memorial was officially erected on April 16, 1918, with an inscription recognizing the unknown soldiers whose names could not be identified after extensive research.
