Physical description Five vertical wooden carved pou posts in a three/two formation installed by the main domain sign.

Description

Six vertical posts that were possibly created and installed for the opening of the Don Rowlands Centre in 2010.

Each pou has distinctive patterns and indentations. 

There is no information about the artists or title of the work.

Location

Installed on both sides of the main entrance to the Don Rowlands Centre, 601 Maungatautari Road, Karapiro.

Physical description Five stone and concrete sculptures of various sizes depicting Karioi, Pirongia, Kakepuku, Te Kawa and Tokanui. A flax design spreads across three of the sculptures.

Description

The Sculpture Park was developed as a millennium project by volunteer group “Keep Te Awamutu Beautiful Society”.

This sculpture sits at the entrance of the park.

Physical description Tall vertical sclupture on a triangle base leading up to a curved point. Highly patterned in steel and paint.

Description

The images show the front and back of the sculpture. The left image highlights the hard lines of the base leading up to the intricate patterns cut from stainless steel placed over the structure.

The right image, shows a curved base and top section with painted interwoven patterns of red, white and black.

The artist Fred Graham was commissioned to create the work for the opening of the Don Rowlands Centre in 2010.

Graham is a Tainui kaumatua of Ngāti Korokī Kahukura descent. He is a world-renowned carver and an inspiring mentor who has shared his knowledge and skills with many Aotearoa New Zealand artists.

Fred Graham has a number of artworks around the Waipā District and is well known for his big outdoor metal and mixed media work like “Kaitiaki” outside the Auckland War Memorial Museum and “Te Waka Taumata o Horotiu” on High Street in Auckland central.

Physical description Whakairo Waharoa hand-carved wooden gateway located in a greenspace with bronze cast plaques.

Description

This waharoa formed part of the art commissioned specially for the opening of the Don Rowlands Centre in 2010.

It stands to the left of the main entrance of the building and acknowledges local Māori occupation of this location and its history.

The plaque reads: “In the year 1830 Te Waharoa, Chief of Ngāti Haus, assisted by Ngāti Koroki Kahukura and Ngāi Te Rangi, defeated the Ngāti Maru at the nearby site of Taumatawiwi. Fearing a counter attack he ordered the burning of his dead warriors on the original site of these rocks now covered by the lake, to prevent any indignities to their bodies.”

Description

Six hinuera stone pillars erected within the roadside council berm in six locations down Shakespear Street.

All pillars are inscribed with various well-known poet quotes by Shakespear.
