Taniwha presents Māori Myths & Legends

September 30, 2023 - October 30, 2023

Free

Tui & Tama’s friend Taniwha is hosting the month of October’s Public Programme!

Each month begins on the Saturday with a FREE Tui & Tama Club event for existing and new members. Tui and Tama’s friends introduce the month’s theme and activities. Each club member receives a Tui & Tama Club Passport to record their participation at the end of the activities with a mascot sticker! Members collect all 6 mascot stickers to go into a special end of year prize pack!

This month our mascot Taniwha welcomes everyone this October to learn myths and legends.

Do you know what a myth or legend is?

A myth or legend is a story passed on through the generations. It can be based in fact or it can be left up to our imagination whether it is true. In the Waipā district, we have myths about taniwha that live in the rivers, guardians of the forest and shape changers who can take the form of birds.

Taniwha has lots of activities and stories to share with visitors. Come on in this October to create mythical taniwha of your own!

  • Design-a-Taniwha using creature parts and the tracing tables!
  • Make a Taniwha mask!
  • Create an articulated Taniwha!
  • Colour-in a Taniwha, cut it out and place it on the mythical landscape!
  • And much more…….!
  • Learn about three myths and legends in the Waipā, illustrated by Phillip Dobbs, aka Dr Riptide!
Don’t forget, when you’ve completed all the activities, collect your Taniwha mascot sticker and add it to your Tui & Tama Activity Passport!
