Karangawai Marsh MMVA held three master classes in January 2022 to support her exhibition in the Gavin Gifford Gallery – He Marangai ki te Whenua, on at the Te Awamutu Museum til 20th March 2022.
Karangawai holds a Master of Māori Visual Art from Te Toioho ki Āpiti at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University in Papaioea Plamerston North. She is now a Senior Tutor at Toioho ki Āpiti, founder of RaRau Mai (Māori language, whānau arts initiative), and project coordinator for Ora te Toi (annual art exhibition).
Karangawai is a 3rd generation Te Ataarangi kaiako and active member for 20 years and is currently preparing for her PhD with a focus on Māori language arts initiatives.
This group of workshops were very popular with the public with some amazing original designs being created on every level and with multi-media. The Māori Design Master Classes were held as shown:
Māori Design Master Class I: Tues Jan 18th, 2022: Two sessions; 10.30am-12pm or 1pm-2.30pm
Kōwhaiwhai – simple pattern design starting with the koruna to create multiple interconnected pattern designs.
Māori Design Master Class II: Wed Jan 19th, 2022: Two sessions; 10.30am-12pm or 1pm-2.30pm
Kōwhaiwhai Hikuwaru – intermediate pattern design using positive and negative space.
Māori Design Master Class III: Thurs Jan 20th, 2022: Two sessions; 10.30am-12pm or 1pm-2.30pm
Kōwhaiwhai Hikuwaru – Porotītaha – create interconnected patterns with shapes.
Cost: $2 per class per session
Ages: Open to all ages, all children need to have adult supervision.
Skills: Beginner – advanced

Get ready this school holidays for some creative DezignaBug activities! We’ve created some awesome activities that test your creative styles. To celebrate our new Curioseum Bug activities we’re getting buggy with it!

The first week of the holidays 4th – 9th October we have created Virtual Activities so you can pick up a DezignaBug pack, use the Youtube link to see the ‘how to’ videos. These are FREE packs for all our locals. Please remember to bring your button drawings in so we can make it into a button. Also, bring your 3D DezignaBug in to take a photo of it in our Diorama!

Printed DezignaBugs will be available for you to colour in. A Museum host will make your chosen one and make it into a badge (limited to 1 badge per child).

From the materials available build your DezignaBug 3D Sculpture. Then, post your DezignaBug in the Amazing Bug World Diorama!

Use your detective eyes to find backyard critters around the Museum, go into the draw for a cool prize pace, 2 to be won!
Virtual activities – kia kaha i te reo Māori with Toi Oriwa!
For the month of September, the Museum has created virtual activities to help you learn a bit of te reo while making traditional cultural items using contemporary materials.
Choose from a Poi or Tī Rākau priced at $5 per pack. Pay for it at the Museum reception. Inside you’ll find all the materials and instructions on a QR code card. Just use your phone or computer camera to read the QR code to take you to Oriwa’s Youtube Chanel, and listen to the instructions. On there you’ll also find a link to how to use your Poi or Tī Rākau.

Wed 14th & Wed 21st July, over two weeks, two sessions per day:
10.00-12pm or 12.30pm-2.30pm
Every participant gets to design their very own tī rākau and learn the waiata/song in Te Reo Māori along with the actions to the game. A great cost effective whānau activity of skill.
Thurs 15th & Thurs 22nd July, over two weeks, two sessions per day:
10.00-12pm or 12.30pm-2.30pm
Ever wanted to lean Ukulele in a fun environment? Bring your Ukulele to this fun workshop and lean basic chords, strums and participate in a mini concert!
Cost: $5 per participant, per session

Tī Rākau Stick Game with Oriwa & Awatea
Saturday 6th February, two sessions:
10.00-11.30am or 12.00pm-1.30pm
Every participant gets to design their very own tī rākau, learn the waiata song in Te Reo Māori and actions to the game. A great test of skill while learning its significance in Māori culture.
